How Horizon Zero Dawn Moves Beyond The Strong Female Character
Interactive Entertainment. It was created by Guerrilla Games and published by the company. The story revolves around Aloy, a teenage hunter living in a world overrun by robots who embarks on a journey to discover her family’s history and identity. Wikipedia
Horizon Zero Dawn is an undeniable milestone for gender equality in AAAs.Aloy represents the cause so overtly that it scarcely needs to be expressed. She’s a powerful female character in every way, from her utilitarian, unsexualized character design to the vital part she plays in the tale. Hell, she even hails from a blatantly matriarchal goddess-worshipping society.
But plenty of games have strong female characters. Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the first to take the next step, releasing its heroine free in a truly progressive universe. Some minor spoilers follow for the events leading up to (and including) Meridian. This post has been retimed following Horizon’s release on PC later this week. The strong female figure has long been a characteristic of supposedly,Aloy is a terrific character. There’s no denying it. She’s clever and interesting, yet can kick ass when she has to. She wears utilitarian attire that is yet loaded with personality and has a unique face that appears like it belongs to a genuine person. She takes initiative when other characters falter and doesn’t hesitate to tell it how it is, constantly criticizing the status quo. She’s a redhead. She’s a progressive herself, breaking taboos and modifying conventions where she sees fit. The developers of Horizon Zero Dawn have said that this was very much their plan. While they wanted to produce a game with a female character, they wanted her to be an intriguing character first and foremost. What we have been focused onBut Horizon has something that sets Aloy distinct from the rest, and puts itself aside from most female-led games. Guerrilla Games have unshackled Aloy from the hackneyed “strong female character” cliché-a woman trying to make her way in a man’s world. Instead, Aloy is given complete freedom to be more than just a gender icon. She needs to fight the burden of being an outcast in a tribe of traditionalists, maybe, or an outsider in new and unfamiliar regions – but for once this powerful female protagonist can do her thing without the narrative calling attention to her femaleness again and again.
A major part of this is thanks to the manner that Aloy’s own world runs.Sony’s President of World Wide Studios was hesitant about Horizon: Zero Dawn having a female lead, but came around after research proved gamers were enthused about the character. During Sony’s E3 press conference, Killzone developer Guerrilla Games unveiled a new PlayStation 4 exclusive title, Horizon Zero Dawn. The trailer for the interesting open-world game revealed an environment where machine-like dinosaurs and monsters roam freely, and players use a specialized bow and arrows to hunt them down. While the new title seems exciting and entertaining, Sony’s president of world-wide studios, Shuhei Yoshida, was concerned about launching the title and voiced his apprehension about announcing Horizon while talking with Polygon after Sony’s press conference. Personally, I found The Last Guardian incredibly emotionally meaningful, a stunning surprise.Fortunately, focus testing revealed that gamers were enthusiastic about the prospect of playing as a strong, independent female protagonist. After Sony unveiled Horizon at E3, gamers expressed their enthusiasm for the new game, which was confirmed by the company. Given the success of female protagonists in recent games such as Tomb Raider and The Last of Us, this kind of endorsement isn’t all that shocking. Furthermore, considering the other games with strong female leads that were shown at E3, such as Rise of the Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Dishonored 2, and Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, it appears that Horizon will not be alone in its efforts to promote a strong female lead in the coming months.
Increasing numbers of developers are bringing strong, multifaceted female characters to the market, and it appears that the days of female characters potentially damaging sales are over. During an interview, Yoshida said that he hoped more studios would continue this process, and that the industry would be able to reach more people as a result.Yoshida claims that Sony conducted extensive focus testing on a variety of various parts of Horizon: Zero Dawn, with the female protagonist being one of those features. Even after the focus testing was completed and the results were good for her, the executive says that he was still apprehensive about the outcome. In addition, he says that as E3 went on and he learned how many games, like Mirror’s Edge and Dishonored 2, had female characters, a lot of his anxiety began to go away.In the end, Yoshida expressed his optimism that the large number of games with female protagonists will serve to extend the gaming audience. The CEO of Sony believes that greater diversity in gaming is a good thing since it allows more individuals to participate in the market. Horizon: Zero Dawn does not have an official release date as of yet, which suggests that it will not be available until later this year.
Many PlayStation fans may have been disappointed to see that Horizon Forbidden West will not be published until next year, even though this was not a complete surprise. I can’t pretend to be disappointed; in fact, I couldn’t care less because, in my opinion, Horizon Zero Dawn is a bad game – and nothing I’ve seen thus far has given me reason to believe that the sequel will be any better.Sony has received a great deal of criticism for employing a variation of the Ubisoft template for all of its first-party titles. According to IGN, the majority of them are third-person open-world games with a strong emphasis on narrative and light role-playing components. That perfectly encapsulates Horizon Zero Dawn, as well as everything else, from God of War to Days Gone, and everything in between. Despite the fact that it is a successful concept, I would argue that one of the most significant faults is that each game’s tone is too similar.
Everything is gloomy and pessimistic (often with zombies), and the main character is usually a middle-aged father who is sad.Fortunately, it isn’t a criticism of Horizon Zero Dawn’s Aloy, who is just as monotonous and unpleasant as any of the game’s male protagonists. At the very least, Sony is being consistent, but given that she is younger than most other Sony heroines, her being so dour and low-energy feels more like her personality was assembled from a collection of checkboxes on a Sony spreadsheet than something more organic.
